Hence when a solute dissolves in a solvent a solution is formed. The solutions in which the solute is evenly distributed throughout the solvent is called as a homogeneous solution. The amount of solute dissolved in the solvents, and the solution formed can all be expressed in terms of concentrations. There are different ways in which the concentration is estimated such as molarity, molality, formality, percent composition and many more. Molality definition: The amount of solute dissolved in one kilogram of the solvent is defined as the molality of the solution. The amount of solute is expressed in moles. Therefore the molal concentration of a solution is the moles of solute in kilogram of the solvent. To find the Molality the required information is Moles of the solute used to form a solution. Amount of the solvent expressed in kilograms. Hence the formula for Molality can be expressed as follows: Units and symbol: The molality of a solution is expressed as m. The units for expressing the molality equals moles/kilograms or mol/kg. Question: Find the molality of 5 moles of Nacl mixed in 2000 grams for the solvent? Here the moles of the solute = 5 moles. The amount of the solvent = 2000 grams. Expressing the solvent in Kilograms = 2000/1000 = 2Kg. Hence using the formula for calculating Molality gives: Simplifying the calculation, Molality = 2.5 m. Question: Find the number or moles of FeO dissolved in 1.5 kg of solvent, if the molality of the solution if 0.3m. Here, the amount of the solvent = 1.5 Kg. Molality of the solvent used = 0.3 m. Hence rearranging the Molality formula for calculating the moles of the solute: This gives Moles of solute = 0.3 x 1.5 = 4.5 moles of Feo. Question: Find the amount of the solvent if 0.24 moles of the solute is dissolved to obtain a molality of 0.48m? Here, the number of moles of the solute = 0.24. The molality of the solution = 0.48 m. Hence rearranging the molality formula for calculating the mass of the solvent gives: The amount of the solvent = 1/2Kg = 0.5 Kg. Finding the moles of the solute: In a few questions the amount of the solute is given, in such cases the moles of the solute need to be calculated before using the molality formula. Introvert Whisperer / Avoiding and Preparing For the Potential Lay Off - Introvert Whisperer Avoiding and Preparing For the Potential Lay Off The idea of getting laid off is a bit more terrorizing thought than in days gone by.  Right now, job loss means facing the possibility that there are fewer jobs out there to get and employers being unclear if hiring is the right business decision.  Losing a job these days is a scary thought.  Laying people off is a constant in businesses and all too frequent in this past decade.  A new saying has been coined: “All jobs are temporary”.  It does seem to be the case, but there are things you can and should do to prepare. Don’t be in Denial The first thing you need to do is to make sure you aren’t being in denial about your personal standing at work and the business you are working for.  In my 21+ years managing in big business, I can’t tell you how many times I spoke to people who said “I didn’t see it coming” when informed of being laid off.  Some of those people worked for me.  Prior to the moment of informing them that they no longer had a job, I spent countless hours communicating about what was to come, informing them of layoff criteria.  Yet, they sat there totally astonished and ticked off.  It never failed to stun me, just how many people simply wouldn’t pay attention.  Other managers had the same thing to report.  Denial about the reality of your situation, especially right now, will only make your situation worse.  Your denial will cause you to lack preparedness emotionally, financially and professionally. Certainly, there are businesses that aren’t as proactive or sensitive to their employees.  In fact, I admit there are businesses that operate by the seat of the pants so much that they don’t even know they’re in trouble until they notice the heat from their hair on fire.  But despite that, there are often warning signs. Be Aware of Warning Signs Warning signs in large businesses usually have some kind of public communication.  If your company is publicly traded, they have to inform their shareholders of business downturns and profit issues.  You can count on the communication to sound positive and upbeat.  Often times, this upbeat sound kind of “dulls” the impact of the issues.  To be fair, if a company is having problems, they do want to ensure they understand the issues and are taking action.  Your best tactic is to listen to both the bad and good news, ensuring you aren’t missing the bad news messages because of the positive.  Try to personalize the bad newsâ€"how is this going to impact you or the area in which you work?  If you can’t translate it down to your level, ask your management what it might mean.  Do your homework.  Ask people inside the company and outside until you have multiple points of view.  THEN, decide if this is your early warning sign. Warning signs in small businesses are harder to detect.  If your company is small but well run, it may be easier.  Obviously, if they are good at communicating, listen to it carefully.  If they aren’t, look for things like, not rehiring when someone leaves, depleting inventory, if you and other workers aren’t busy, and even things like not meeting payroll on time.  Any activity that requires money to make it happen will usually be the first thing that gets stopped or cut back.  Even though warning signs in small companies are harder to detect, with a bit of observation, they can be seen. Obviously, there are always those businesses that have and give no warning signs.  If you have been the recipient of a layoff in this situation, you have my deepest sympathy.  I have known people to get raises and promotions one week and laid off the next.  I’m not saying that all situations generate warning signs.  I am saying, most of them do have warning signs, and I’m pointing out that too many people prefer to ignore or deny the reality of their situation. Prepare.  My second piece of advice is to prepare as if you will lose your job.  Get your personal financial situation in order.  Eliminate debt and create an emergency fund.  If you lose your job, the thing that will cause the biggest stress will be a mountain of debt that you have no means to repay.  With that debt gone and having an emergency fund, if you lose your job, you can proceed with greater confidence that you and your family will be okay for a while.  As you know, your personal confidence plays a huge role in getting a job in the first place.  If you are panic stricken, you dull your intelligence and problem-solving abilities, both things critical to job search. Get yourself ready for a job search  Update your resume’.  Ensure you have letters of reference, job reviews, any documents that support your performance that you might need.    Do your homework.  Identify where you would start your job search.  Make sure your network is warmed up and you’ve renewed old relationships. If appropriate, start sending out “feelers” to see what situation other companies are in for hiring.  If you are really sure the pink slip is coming, go ahead and start the process.  It’s much easier to find a job when you have a job, and right now there is a growing bias against hiring people who are unemployed.  Get ahead of the power curve. Getting Started with Composing for Films Suzy S. Learning how to read and write music can open up tons of possible pathways for music careers, including composing for films. Read on for some helpful advice from Linden, NJ piano teacher Richard D Have you ever found yourself listening to your iPod or stereo, and felt like the music was perfect for whatever you were doing in that moment?  Sometimes, when I’m walking to the store or heading to work while listening to music, the song plays with my imagination and emotions, almost as if Im in a music video or a movie. Maybe I just have an overactive imagination, but this is the power that music has over us. We can feel the emotions that the piece is expressing. If you’ve ever wanted to be a film composer, I have a few tips that I’d love to share with you. Pay attention to what other successful composers are doing, because there’s a reason they’re successful. This will begin to change the way you watch movies, as I tend to study movies now, instead of watch them. I like to sit and enjoy the movie, then listen to the soundtrack by itself at a later time. Although sometimes, it’s tough for me not to take notes. Never stop writing music. The only way you can consistently grow as a composer is to keep working and learning. You need to keep evolving as a musician. The music in a movie is very important; so important that it was the only thing heard in silent movies.   The better you are at your craft, the better your music will be. Make friends with directors, writers and anyone else in the business. It doesn’t matter how many pieces you write if no one hears them. Building your network is very important in the music industry. Keeping your music on your computer or in your notebook makes it impossible for anyone to hear it. Share what you’ve created, and be proud of it. Creating your own website is a great way to build a network. When you have people to give you projects, whether they are films, commercials or videos, then your work will be seen by their friends as well. In the meantime, practice on movies you already own… just press mute. If you have a program that can rip DVDs and allow you to work on the actual file with Pro-Tools or Logic, practice on those. Don’t delete anything, and don’t share anything you aren’t finished with yet. This is two points in one for me. There will come a time when you’re working on a piece, and you just don’t like it. Don’t delete it. Just because it isn’t working out now, doesn’t mean it still won’t work later.
